Paper Piecing using Distress Paints – a Video Tutorial

Posting this video tutorial a couple days later that usual this week. It’s been a weirdly hectic work week full of lots of trying to feel better. I’m happy to report that I’m feeling a TON better – at about 80% of my normal health. Resting Saturday through Tuesday was definitely the best decision I’ve made in a while. I was even able to go to class on Thursday and pretty much catch up in my classes before the start of spring break. Yay! So thank you so much for your well wishes and sweet comments. :)

Today, I wanted to share a little more with Distress Paints. How about some paper piecing featuring my all-time favorite stamp set from Tim Holtz: Birthday Blueprints. Enjoy!

Here’s a better look at the finished card:

I used three very different stamp sets on this card – the Birthday Blueprints, Lawn Fawn’s Sharp Backdrops and Check This Out for that fabulously long sentiment. Can you tell that the new LF releases have already fully integrated themselves into my crafting? Love it!

Other things that make this card tick- the StazOn Jet Black ink is perfect for stamping on top of the paint, my beloved Sharpie Markers made touching up the stamped images very easy (you can get them in sets of 12, too, and I totally squealed when I found them in bulk) and finally, the Memento Tuxedo Black marker is absolutely perfect for going around the edges of stamped images.

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial for this week. This next week is going to be incredibly fabulous. It’s my spring break, so I’ll finally have time to get some projects from my big long list done. Yay! And, there may just be a fun special announcement on Wednesday (March the 20th), so  you’re going to want to stop back for that. See you soon with more fun!

Love,
Britta

Although this last week has been AMAZING, (Seriously, dream after dream… and I haven’t even told you everything yet!) I came down with whatever Jake (the bf) had this last week, and now I’m sick with this awful sore-throat-fever-tired thing. Life always has a way of keeping me humble. Lol! I’ll take it, though. This is the first winter I’ve ever had without getting sick multiple times before March even got here. I’m not sure what to thank for that – my massages, the therapeutic nature of having a cat around, acupuncture, my daily intake of vitamin D and B12, my healthy eating habits or even my migraine medicine, but I’ll take it. Plus, I have a fantastic cuddle monster of a kitty to keep me company.

Little did I know when I was adopting a cat that I was really also adopting a second shadow. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Life is good. And now, I’m going to go watch Netflix on the sofa and try not to bury myself in a pile of Kleenex. Ha!

Love,
Britta

On the Hero Arts Blog today… <3

Today’s the day I finally get to share one of the really exciting things I’ve been working on. I have a video tutorial and post up over on the famed Hero Arts blog today!

I can’t even tell you how honored and humbled I am to be contributing over to their blog today. Hero is who made all the stamps I used when crafting with my mom back when I was a kiddo, and they’re who inspired me to start stamping and card making again about 5 years ago. To be over on the blog today is a dream come true.

If you’re coming here after seeing the post, here are links to all the supplies I show in the video. Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks so much for all of your love and support. I wouldn’t be here without you!

Distress Paints Layering – Video Tutorial

*If you’re looking for the Teri and Friends Technique Tuesday blog hop post, please click here or scroll down on the main page of my blog.*

If you saw my card that I posted yesterday, you may have thought this was coming. I’ve had a change to play a little with the new Distress Paints, and I’m in LOVE. Eek! The video tutorial for this week features these guys in Picket Fence, Mustard Seed, Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade and Spun Sugar. Yum!

Here’s the video for this week. Enjoy!

I talk about my favorite 12 colors in this blog post, if you’re interested in which ones to pick up first!

And here’s the finished card. I’m so in love with this fresh and bright ombre look. And the pink? How perfect is the color scheme for a baby girl card?!

02-27-13 Distress Paint Layering Video Tutorial by Britta Swiderski-1

Although the background tends to steal the show, the cast of supporting characters here is the cute stamping from Lawn Fawn’s Plus One and the brand new Lemon Bakers Hemp. They pull everything together into a funky but polished overall feel. And the coloring on the rattles? That’s done with Distress Paint, too. Just tap a little out onto your craft sheet and you can paint with a brush just like you would with acrylic. It was insanely easy, and there was no extra color matching required.

I hope you enjoyed this little layering tutorial. This is just the beginning of playing with these new paints, and I can’t wait to have more time to play with them! I’m keeping nice and crazy busy with school, some freelance work and my own projects, but that’s okay. I like being busy – gives me a reason to get out of bed in the morning. :) Be back soon for some fun with one of my favorite products of all time. (Cough*wood veneer*cough!)

Love,
Britta

Teri and Friends Technique Tuesday Blog Hop

Hey there and thanks for hopping along with the Teri and Friends Technique Tuesday Blog Hop! You should be arriving here from Ashley’s lovely blog. If you’re just now joining the hop, head over to Teri’s blog to start from the beginning!

I’m absolutely honored to be participating in this hop. Not only is Teri a fantastic and hilarious friend and kindred spirit, but she’s also an awesome stamp designer. She’s been designing for Technique Tuesday for almost a year, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next! You can check out all of the brand new Technique Tuesday stamps here. Thanks for inviting me to join in the fun, Teri!

Today, I’m featuring one of my very favorite Teri stamp sets – Fun Flair. It’s sassy and bold, and I love it.

02-25-13 Technique-Tuesday-With-Flair-Clear-Stamps-Medium

Here’s what I came up with. I using the fabulous heart stamp (in Green Hills Mid-Tone Shadow ink from Hero Arts) and the hello circle (stamped in Neon Blue ink from Hero Arts), I created this fantastic pattern. The circles all fit perfectly in a 1-inch circle punch, so this makes it incredibly easy to pop the sentiment up off the pattern.

The stamp pattern really pops off the page over the background I made doing a little blending with Distress Paints. You heard me correctly… Distress Paints are in the house! You can see how I made the background below. Hint: it was super easy! Here I used some watercolor paper, a mister with water, and Distress Paints in Picket Fence, Broken China, Salty Ocean and Chipped Sapphire on a craft sheet. The hardest part about this card was letting the background dry. ;) I love the combination of the bold, graphic look of the Fun Flair stamp set with the fluid, organic look of the painted background.

Here’s a few photos I took while making the background to show you how easy it was.

02-26-13 Distress Paints Background Step by Step by Britta Swiderski-1

First, I dabbed on the four colors onto my craft sheet and then sprayed on some water to help them blend together.

Then, I pressed and squished my watercolor paper into the paint.

Then I did that again, making sure to get the edges really well.

Then I added some more water sprayed directly onto the paper – this helped it mix and react even more.

Finally, I used my fingers to smear and blend the colors together until every inch was colored with vibrant color.

Then, it was a quick clean up with a wet wipe and I set aside the background to dry. Ta dah! A Distress Paint background.

My blog is the last stop on this blog hop, so thank you so much for hopping along! If you missed any of the posts or wish to start again, head over to Teri’s blog for the beginning of the hop!

I also get to give away another fabulous Teri stamp set- Button Up – on this stop of the hop! Make sure to leave a comment on this post for your chance to win. You have until the end of February, 2013 to leave a comment. I’ll be drawing a winner in the morning of March 1st!
