Distress Marker Fall Background – Simon Says Stamptember®

Hola! I wanted to make sure and stop in this week to share some fun technique love with you in a video tutorial featuring a brand new Simon Says Stamp Stamptember® background stamp! For those of you who don’t know yet, Stamptember® is Simon’s month-long stamping celebration that has taken place for the last 5 years in September. And boy, did they out do themselves this year! There are so many great new products and awesome inspiring projects to go along with them. Be sure to check out Simon’s Stamptember® release here and their blog for even more inspiration.

Here’s a peek at the cards we’ll be making in today’s tutorial. I’m using one of my favorite mediums with background stamps: Distress Markers! Believe it or not, you can get at least two backgrounds out of each inking of the stamp. Enjoy the video!

The best part about this card is that you can make it as simple or as complex as you want. For example, you could color the background with more random swatches of color or even using Distress Ink pads to get a similar but more random look. You could also go more simple with the sentiment and simply stamp one onto a piece of vellum or a label to go in the middle of the card. With a little tweaking, this would be a great design to reproduce for holiday cards!

Here’s a close-up look at the first stamping of the leaf background stamp. I love the interplay of all of the colors in such random way that yet makes so much sense. Here, you can also get a closer look at the little bit of touch-up I did in the video with just a bit of water and a tiny paint brush. With just the stamped color on the paper, I was able to smooth out any of the leaves that didn’t transfer as perfectly as I would’ve liked.

Here’s the second card of the duo. I always tend to like the second stamping even better than the first – its subtle but bright color tones are right up my alley! All you have to do is lightly mist over the stamp once more and then press a new piece of watercolor paper onto the stamp’s surface. Bam! Two backgrounds for the effort of one.

You can really see how awesome the stacked die cuts in soft navy + glossy accents make a sentiment that is strong enough to stand up to the bold pattern in the background without overpowering the rest of the card. (Jennifer McGuire uses this techniques on her cards often, and I love it!)

Oh! And the Distress Marker colors I used on the background were Mustard Seed (as the base and unifying color), Forest Moss, Peeled Paint, Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade, Ripe Persimmon and Barn Door. They all so well into the fall color scheme. I could also see this working very well with a set of lighter or darker greens as well. That would be a great way to bring around this design to spring and summer!

I also promised I would share some of my favorites from the Stamptember® release. Of course I love the Leaf Background stamp, but my other top three would have to be the Many Thanks Stamp Set, the Paw Dies Set (can you imagine all of the cute things I could make about Leia?!?!) and, of course, the new colors of inks. I’m planning a video with a comparison of all the inks that have come out lately – there are so many options out there, but Simon’s inks are some of the best because they’re formulated just like my beloved Hero Arts ones. Yummmm!

Thank you so much for stopping by today. Now it’s back to rest for me; I got hit with this terrible sinus-infection-virus-y-thing that everyone seems to have around here from being at the State Fair. I guess that’s what you get when you put a total of 1,824,830 people in one place over the span of 12 days. At least the doctor gave me a prescription for some kick-butt cough medicine. Ha! See you again soon on Friday with some more much-requested Filofax inserts!

Love,
Britta

Yippee Yeti!

I am trying not to be too much of an angsty yeti lady here up in Minnesota as I have officially reached the winter breaking point last weekend with that terrible ice storm/blizzard that destroyed our roads (half are still covered with an inch of compacted snow and ice), gave Jake’s rear bumper a nice big crack in it (he was shaken up but otherwise fine) and resulted in me digging my car out of the four foot snow drift that the nighttime parking lot plow crew left (so politely) behind my car.

So let’s instead celebrate the fun, snowball-throwing part of winter AND the fact that my little (tiny, BABY) brother earned his driver’s license on Thursday last week. I’m so very proud of him, so he gets an adorable yeti card to celebrate.

The Yeti Set Go stamp set from Lawn Fawn is the perfect happy-go-lucky winter set to make congratulatory card. I stamped everything out on Neenah White cardstock with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and then colored with copics. Copics used: Trees – G05, G17 – Letters – BG000 – Yeti – BG000, BV00, BV01, T0, T2, T5, R21.

I add three more big touches to bring everything together. The snowy hills were made from watercolor paper and covered in Frosted Lace Stickles. The kraft cardstock was stamped with the Tiny Ink Spots background in Soft Pool shadow ink for a snowy effect. Lastly, and most prominently, I used Quinn’s ABCs and the coordinating dies + BG000 for a subtle kick of color to really make the extra happy.

All and all, though, we’re doing pretty well around here. I’m making lots of lists, trying my best to stay motivated and taking time to relax and celebrate life. Like the other day when Jake and I went on a date to The Lego Movie, which was, in fact, awesome.

Thank you so much for stopping by today. See you very soon with a CHA wrap-up of sorts. What comes after that? Only I know the answer to that one. ;)

Love,
Britta

Stamps and Everything Stamping – CHA2014

Hey, you! I’ve been working on this post for weeks, so it’s time to get it out there in the world. Ready or not, let’s talk stamps – and LOTS of stamps! Here are a lot of my favorites from the show, in no particular order. :)

Hero Arts

Hero Arts, for me, consists of two big categories: awesome stamps and awesome stamping supplies. I had the chance to see a lot of these awesome new products in person and wanted to share some of my favorite photos from the booth with you. These products are all available now for sale at Simon Says Stamp and Ellen Hutson, to be sure to check them out if a few of them strike your fancy!

Note: Click on any photo to see it full size for more detail and quality!

Above, several of the wood-mounted rubber stamps caught my eye like the Zebra Print Background, Leopard Print Background, Pattern Stripes and Petals of Beauty. Each one of those stamps brings to mind about eighty different ways I want to use them! I am especially excited about these watercolor-looking flowers. Yum!

Several clear sets caught my eye as well. Some of my favorites are A Little (shown above), Enjoy Today, Need Caffeine and YAY!

Missing from my pictures but not from my wishlist is the Tiny Flags background stamp and awesome Triangle Background coordinating die and some favorites from HA+Basic Grey: Fresh Cut Pebble Pattern, Fresh Cut Raindrops and Fresh Cut Tiny Triangles backgrounds.

See quick links to a lot of my favorites here. Click on “SS” for the product at Simon Says Stamp and “EH” for the product at Ellen Hutson. I only link to products and shops that I know and love.

AHA Arts

I’ve already gushed over how enamored I am with newcomer AHA Arts and can’t wait to get my hands on some of their stamps. [See my post about my favorite new companies here to read more about them.]

02-18-14 CHA2014 Best Stamps by Britta Swiderski-11

You can currently purchase their line of stamps on their website here, but I expect to see them in some of our favorite retailers soon. Just a few of my favorites: Paint Strokes & SplatsGeometric BordersGirls & Co and Painterly Shapes.

Lawn Fawn

It’s no secret that I completely love Lawn Fawn. I was their intern for a summer, I’ve used their products for years, and their style is so unique and yet so versatile. Their new release of stamps & dies (and two papercrafting collections) is coming up in just a few hours, so watch out for these stamps to go HUGE in the coming weeks.

Above is a look at a lot of the new stamp sets and some personal favorites: Starry Backdrops, Let’s Roll, #Awesome stamp set + coordinating #Awesome dies as well as a couple of the great standalone dies: Grassy Border, Scripty Hello and Spring Showers die set.

But we can’t dare to forget about the stamp set that stole my heart at the show: Critters from the Past. DINOSAURS! Even my boyfriend is excited about this stamp set! Not even kidding.

And also Wish You Were Here stamp set and coordinating dies. This set is going to be perfect for travel, project life and year-round card use. And it doesn’t really take that long to watercolor 48 states. ;)

Here’s a look at their full new stamp release. You can also pre-order (and soon order!) their papercrafting collections Hello Sunshine (Simon|Ellen) and Let’s Polka (Simon|Ellen).

Penny Black

The Penny Black booth was another joy to visit. For one thing, their stamps span a wide variety of styles – there’s something for everything – but really, their samples are just awesome. I can’t wait to see what their team does with the flower stamps pictured below (Luminous, Sunny Pair and Jubilant).

Another fantastic feature of their booth was the way they showed off their stencil + stamp sets. The mixed media art was incredible, and now I want to own all of these sets! My favorites: Softly cling stamp + Promenade matching stencil and the Delightful cling stamp + Verdant matching stencil

Take a gander at the fabulousness of the Softly stamp and Promenade stencil in action. AMAZING! I can’t wait to give something like this a try on my own.

Ellen Hutson has some of my favorite new Penny Black stamps and stencils for sale now:

Avery Elle

I have been very interested in Avery Elle since their company’s launch. I have several of their sets and was really excited to see what was new in their booth. Unfortunately, the booth was super packed the two times I went by, so I snapped a couple of quick photos and made sure I wasn’t getting in the way of any sales. ;)

Some favorite things I spotted in the booth (and in the catalog): Bottle It Up Stamp set + Bottle It Up Dies has a really awesome terrarium theme, Needle Little Heart Die is going to be so much fun for stitching patterns (and has a coordinating stamp set) and the Cake & Candles stamp set has some really great birthday sentiments.

And, of course, I couldn’t leave the booth without getting a good peek at the new line of Avery Elle Pigment Inks. All of the colors are available now as well, but my favorites have to be Aquamarine, Celery and Mimosa.

Ranger

There’s no question that Ranger knows a thing (or a bajillion) about stamping. Their releases always come out with a bang, the mediums and tools are often the highlight of it all. Today, I wanted to focus on just my favorite stamps and inks because, well, this post is already eight times too long. Haha!

02-18-14 CHA2014 Best Stamps by Britta Swiderski-12

This texture background stamps from Tim Holtz + Stampers Anonymous are going to be fantastic for all sorts of techniques. I’m particularly excited about the Cracks and Specks set. All of these will be so versatile!

02-18-14 CHA2014 Best Stamps by Britta Swiderski-13

Dina Wakely is now on the Ranger scene as a new signature designer, and I’m loving on this Textures stamp set from her new line.

02-18-14 CHA2014 Best Stamps by Britta Swiderski-17

Inks and Ranger are HUGE, and there are three separate releases here I’m excited about:

  1. New Archival Ink colors from Wendy Vecchi – especially Leaf Green, Forget-Me-Not and Dandelion – add a brighter spin to the existing line. The technique above was done with reinker drops from Leaf Green, Hydrangea and Tree Branch + Rubbing Alcohol + Specialty Stamping paper. Awesome, right?
  2. Mini Distress Inks – these will be fantastic for stampers just looking to get into Distress without a huge investment, plus Kit 3 with four of my favorite neutrals may come in handy for distressing in tight spaces.
  3. Ink Sprays from Dyan Reaveley – I doubt I have to reiterate how much I love these mists (after all, I did do an entire class about them), but it’ll be great to have even more colors in the range, especially beautiful Polished Jade.

Here are some quick links to some of my favorites from the stamping category:

Technique Tuesday

I really enjoyed my time chatting with the wonderful people in the Technique Tuesday booth. They do a great job constantly coming up with new designs to release, and several ones made me particularly excited this time around.

02-18-14 CHA2014 Best Stamps by Britta Swiderski-1

Above, the Kiss by Ali Edwards stamp set pairs up perfectly with the Nested Hearts dies. TT is doing an awesome job standardizing sizes and shapes so that multiple stamps work across multiple dies, and that’s pretty awesome.

02-18-14 CHA2014 Best Stamps by Britta Swiderski-2

This is a look at the awesome card die system Technique Tuesday is building upon. These are all meant to be versatile as well as visually interesting, and I think they accomplish that particularly with the Home Circle Card, Magic Circle Card and Quotes Card dies.

02-18-14 CHA2014 Best Stamps by Britta Swiderski-3

And, of course, the stamp sets stand up on their own. I am all over Days Flair by Ali Edwards (absolute perfection for Project Lifers), Classic Ali Edwards sentiments and Rah Rah Sentiments. So many good things to look at here!

And that, my friends, is my most condensed version possible of all my favorite stamps from the show. I know, there are a lot, but I hope you spotted a few things that pique your interest and inspire you to pick up a few new stamps or inks to add to your collection. It’s really all about knowing what’s out there and what will work best for you and your style.

Thanks so much for letting me share with you and for stopping by today! And now, I think we all deserve a celebratory beverage for making it through this post. Hehe. See you again soon!

Love,
Britta
