Menu Planning & Organization

Hola! You see, I have this problem. I always have had a really hard time deciding what to eat. Especially now that I mostly work from home, I’m left to my own devices for all my meals. This means most days I’m really needing a kick in the pants to make food for my meals versus just ordering delivery.

Enter the idea of meal planning. Now, meal planning has taken ahold of the blogging and pinterest-inspired world as a means to organize food for an entire family, but I don’t need to organize for four or more people. I need to organize for myself and, occasionally, Jake. So I’ve tailored this system to my way of planning and eating and even made a new insert for my filofax to match. Step One: Write down a list of all the meals I make, like to eat and want to make.

Step Two: Go through my recipe binder (full of print outs of recipes from the internet and scans of family recipes and notes from my mom) and add those to the list, designating them with an “R” to signify that I have a recipe to follow. I also added an orange dot to ones that involve dairy, since I’m lactose intolerant but can enjoy a little cheese once in a while.

Step Three: Cut apart some Super Sticky Full-Adhesive Post-it notes and write my meal options in the rectangles. (The insert printable set comes with instructions and measurements for cutting apart the post-it notes.)

Step Four: Place the meal options onto the Menu Planning Insert in my Filofax in categories that make sense. For me, these categories are: Sides, Salads, Soups, Takeout, Fresh Meals (ones where I need to buy things from the grocery store), Crockpot Meals, Pantry Meals and a page for spare rectangles.

Step Five: Enjoy! I can use these post-it squares as they are for inspiration, for making a list when heading off to the grocery store (or making an impromptu one while there) or sticking them to each day of the week in my week on two pages calendar setup. This system would work in an infinite number of ways depending on how you like to plan your meals.

I also keep extra meal planning sheets, post-its and my meal list in my recipe binder. This helps keep everything in one place.

So that’s what’s going on with me today. Sorry I’ve been a bit of a bad blogger lately – I’ve been dealing with a lot of big things in my life. From a sleep study to figure out why my body is so inefficient at sleeping (delay onset of REM sleep – BOO!)  to looking around the area at jobs and adding to my resume, I’ve been a busy girl. This weekend, we have friends coming up from Milwaukee to stay for the weekend, so I’m trying to get the apartment in tip-top shape before then. Oh my, DIY projects abound! I can’t wait to share more with you soon. :)

  1. This is a great way to use post-its. I’m always a little hesitant about how to use them, but for meal planning, they are perfect.
