Interlude in IDK

This’ll be a quick post, but I wanted to make a point to post and let you know my thoughts on life at the moment.

I’ve been getting emails. Well, I always get emails, but I’ve been getting more emails (and comments) lately wondering where I am, what I’m doing, when my next tutorial will be, why I haven’t been posting all the time and more. I wanted to assure you that, yes, I still own my own blog and, yes, I will still be writing on it. But I Don’t Know the answers to any of those other questions. If you had a chance to read my last post, you may have realized that I’m in (as always, but different) a new chapter of life consumed with a new job + new business, volunteer work and new other adult responsibilities that I’m still learning how to handle with more grace and fewer naps.

This blog is more a diary of my life and inspiration than anything else. Would I love to be able to write a blog post every day? Absolutely. But that’s just not in the cards right now. I hope you understand and can see that although my blog isn’t the forefront of my life right now, that doesn’t mean that it won’t be my constant companion for years to come.

If you have been getting frustrated checking my blog for new material, please don’t hesitate to subscribe to my blog with a service that emails you when I post. I have a feedburner feed set up, and that’s how I make sure to keep track of blogs that I try to read on a regular basis.

I can’t leave without sharing a few things from the past couple weeks, though! Here are some pictures from my holidays. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from my happy little family to yours. :)

I've been knitting a lot lately, including with this budget variegated yarn, because I'm running a knitting club for elementary schoolers in January. It's exciting, and it's going to be crazy. Leia is an especially big fan of the additional yarn in the picture.

Leia adores her Christmas gift - a seat that suction cups to the sliding glass door. She sits/sleeps on it about half the day!

This is a present I designed for several of my friends. It's a woodgrain design with cursive inside jokes. It goes in the back of this shadowbox to collect beer bottle caps. :) The gift was a hit! (Drawn with my favorite marker and colored with copics.)

The local brewery that first introduced me to craft beer, Surly, opened at its grand, new location. Man, it's so amazing. I highly recommend a visit if you're ever in the Twin Cities!

I got sick with the flu. Really, really sick. Like 102 degree fever for four days sick. I don't have to guess where I got it from... it came from school and one of the 20 little gremlins that had it last week. Or all of them. At least I had audiobooks, my kitty and some Christmas gifts (here, I'm making soy candles for the first time - would you like to see a post about this?) to keep my mind off the terror that was my Christmas Flu.

Friends Christmas, Year Two. 14 of us spending the day together at a brewery, a bar, our apartment and eventually falling asleep to several of the guys backseat driver-watching Star Wars Episode 4.

Another year with our 6-foot Christmas tree (this year with a gold and red color scheme). I love it and I can't wait to have at least three Christmas trees to decorate every year. Maybe two Christmases from now we'll have a house. :)

I felt well enough to travel home (a day late) on Christmas Eve. Jake and I spent our first Christmas together in the am and pm, and it was wonderful. All in all, we had 6 Christmases together. That's a WHOLE lot of Christmas.

My mom's decorating was amazing and as colorful as always.

My mom’s decorating was as amazing and as colorful as always. My mom said Jake will get a stocking as soon as we get married (we’re not engaged… yet), but he has to let her know a year in advance because it takes her so long to knit them. Lol!

I had the pleasure of spending lots of time with Jake's sister, Melissa. We love it so much that she likes good beer now. We get to go to the coolest Milwaukee bars!

Jake's mom's Santa cookies were as delicious as ever. I know her recipe is awesome as it is, but the Santa shape just adds that extra bit of magic that makes the cookies incredible.

We spend some time with Melissa's ferret, Link, too. He's absolutely hilarious, and Melissa thinks it's awesome that I'm not afraid to pick him up. My argument: why would I be? He's like a short, long cat with racoon markings. Ha!

But really when it all comes down to it, it feels amazing to be back home with kitty and my own bed. Leia's also a big fan of the promo fleece blanket that I picked up at the gift basket portion of Jake's extended family Christmas (it's crazy and the best tradition ever). She wasn't super excited about being wrapped up like a burrito but then slept like this for three hours. Hmmm... haha.

Now I’m off to go continue resting. Thankfully, all of my flu symptoms are gone except a horrendous cough that comes every time I try to talk. Needless to say, I’m drinking ALL of the water and hoping I don’t have to do too much loud talking at work tomorrow. Yeah, right. ;) Thanks for all the love and support!

Love,
Britta

I have no words.

So let me share some things. Pictures? I haven’t even taken that many pictures because I’m working holiday retail and 60 hours a week is making me a crazy person. Thank goodness the season will be over in three-ish weeks and then I can go back into a craft-ful hibernation.

1. I’m using this technique to make several Christmas gifts this year. You should check it out, because it’s kind of awesome. Consequently, you can buy most of these materials at Blick where I happen to have an employee discount. I think you can put those two and two together.

2. I work at Sephora now. I don’t remember if I told you that or not. But I work there. Yay! I like it a lot a lot (but I’m not committing to the word love yet because it’s still a pretty new relationship; you know how that goes), and I want to share five discoveries that make my makeup-loving face-life better. On some planet, that last sentence made sense.

  1. Stila Stay All Day liquid liner pen [Single] [I bought it in the Holiday Essentials Kit that is sold out online but is still around in some brick-and-mortar stores] – seriously, I’ve cried excessively (overtired + hungry + dishwasher issues) with this on, and it was still perfect. I don’t even know how that’s possible.
  2. Urban Decay All-Nighter makeup setting spray – spraying my face with this makes my makeup last (with the exception of lips) for at least 12 hours without smudging, budging or fading. If you wear makeup on a regular basis for more than four hours at a time, this is worth its weight in gold. BTW, the sister product, De-Slick, receives rave reviews from my coworkers with more oily skin.
  3. Urban Decay Lip Liner in Ozone – it’s clear lip liner. It seems like it wouldn’t do much of anything, but it works. It stops feathering, it makes your lip color stick, it makes your lip color stay and did I mention it stops lip color from feathering? If you put color on your lips, this is your new best friend.
  4. Sephora Lip Cream Stains, especially this one in 04 Endless Purple – in-house brands don’t have a lot of street cred on the… street, but Sephora has a fantastic in-house brand. These lip creams are the freaking best and much less expensive than other brands at the store because there’s no distributor middleman to pay.
  5. Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil in dark brown – you probably know that I’m a natural blonde but dye my hair dark (because I like it that way), so I have to add a little color to my brows (and shape them!) to make them look like they match my hair. This pencil is the hardest, purest thing ever, and it’s SO EASY to use. The “lead” being very hard and durable makes it easy to make quick, light strokes and go darker if necessary. I’ve also heard these pencils can last people for up to a year, so don’t let the price tag scare you.

3. IT WAS LEIA’S BIRTHDAY! On the 12th, it was our one-year anniversary of adopting our sweet little Princess Leia “Pants” Batman Swiderski, and now she’s officially two years old. She still loves wet food, and she still hates her Christmas Outfit. For you only, my dear readers:

I just… I can’t even handle that face right now.

4. I’m working on a bajillion projects! Things are still happening… I think?

Please note that I have been cooking, not crafting, with the crockpot. I haven’t *quite* reached that level of crafty yet. Give me three years.

5. I’m in love with PITT Artist Pens. I rather like to type Pitt Artist Pens so it doesn’t feel like I’m yelling.

If you would like to buy them in pretty colors, you can buy them at Simon Says, Ellen Hutson or Blick. (Shopping with any of those links helps support my site, and I hope you know that I’d never link to anything or anyone I don’t absolutely loooooove or at least like a lot a lot.)

6. Thanks for being here. You are my favorite. I’m going to go pass out now. Only 52 work hours left this week! (Insert crazy eyes here.)

Love,
Britta

Dear Santa: Christmas Quickies!

Hello friends! I’m here to share another card I made for A Blog Named Hero and their month-long Dear Santa event. Today is all about Christmas Quickies.

11-27-13 Britta Swiderski Quickie for ABNH-1

I have three things I love to do when making a quick card: mist for color, keep the stamping simple and add sparkle. Mist is a great way to add instant color, and it dries super quickly if you roll a paper towel roll over it. I used the 6 by 6 Baubles stencil from The Crafter’s Workshop + watercolor paper and sprayed Dylusions Sprays in Fresh Lime, Dirty Martini and Cut Grass over the top. Remove the stencil, roll a roll of paper towel over your paper and then you’re ready to put it on your card base!

Since the background is so awesome and vibrant (and fast!), all I did after that was stamp my sentiment from Let It Snow by Lawn Fawn with some StazOn onto some thick vellum, attach it with some Be Creative 3mm tape along the edges and then used the 5mm tape over the top + Picked Raspberry Distress Glitter to cover the adhesive.

And, of course, don’t forget the Hero Arts gemstones for a little extra sparkle. There you go, a vibrant Christmas card in about 5 minutes!

If you’re loving this mist look, be sure to check out my self-paced class, Misty Crafty Happy. It has 16 fun videos all about various techniques with misting. You can get such a pretty, vibrant look in just a few sprays. I love it! Because it’s my birthday on the 28th, purchase digital item from my store and save 15% until Monday, December 2nd, 2013 using the code BIRTHDAYCAKE. Shop now in the store here for you choice of four crowd-favorite self-paced classes and 4 different types of planner inserts. Come celebrate with me!

Thanks so much for stopping by today. Make sure to check out the rest of the projects here on the ABNH blog. Those crafters sure to know how to whip something up just in the nick of time. :)

Love,
Britta

P.S. Happy Thanksgiving to all of my friends in the US and ex-pats around the world. I’m making Thanksgiving dinner for the very first time, spending my very first Turkey day in Minnesota AND it’s also my birthday. I am going to make and eat ALL THE FOOD. And of course I have a plan:

11-27-13 Life Update-2

I also just scored a third job at Sephora for the holiday season, so it looks like my makeup addiction will finally be a self-sustaining hobby. Ha! I know I’m a little crazy, but if I’m going to do retail for the holiday season, I might as well work at places I love. :)

11-27-13 Life Update-1

(Nail polish organizer here on Amazon – I didn’t realize I had this much polish!)

Thanks for all of the well-wishes on twitter, facebook and instagram this last week as I’ve been doing well in my professional endeavors but battling some super nasty withdrawal from an anxiety medication. This year, I’m thankful for being able to pay my bills and for a group of family and friends that is there for me unconditionally. I love you all so much!
